Sharon Mortimer


Sharon Mortimer PhD graduated with a BSc (Hons) in Biological Sciences from the University of Newcastle, and a PhD from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Sydney, Australia, and completed two years of postdoctoral research in the Department of Animal Science at the University of Sydney. She became a Clinical Embryologist in 1985 and has served as Laboratory/Scientific Director for a number of ART clinics in Canada, receiving CFAS Certification as an ART Scientific Director in 2013. She is a consultant in ART and the Scientific Director of the Fertility Laboratory, Eastern Regional Health Authority in St John’s, NL, and is an Adjunct Professor in the UBC Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility. Her research interests are sperm kinematics, cryopreservation, the physiology of sperm-egg interaction and fertilization, and the development of tests of sperm function in vitro, as well as the evaluation of the impact of research.

She is the co-author of Quality and Risk Management in the IVF Laboratory, as well as more than 60 publications and 150 conference presentations. She is an active member of 10 professional societies, was a member of the committees that developed the certification standards for ART Laboratory professionals in Canada, and co-author of nine international professional consensus guidelines. She was the Editor-in-Chief of Reproduction, Fertility and Development (2004-2009) and currently serves as the Science Section Editor for Reproductive Biomedicine and Society Online.
